There is something magical about shooting street photography with a vintage film camera. The mechanical precision, the deliberate process, and the tangible results create an experience that digital photography simply cannot replicate. Here are our top tips for getting started.
Choosing Your First Vintage Camera
For street photography, we recommend starting with a 35mm rangefinder or a compact SLR. The Leica M6, Contax G2, Olympus OM-1, and Canon AE-1 are all excellent choices that remain readily available on the used market.
The Right Lens for Street Work
A 35mm or 50mm prime lens is the classic street photography focal length. These lenses are fast, compact, and force you to engage with your subjects at a natural distance. A good 50mm f/1.4 can be found affordably and will produce stunning results.
Film Selection
For beginners, we recommend starting with Kodak Tri-X 400 or Ilford HP5 Plus for black and white, or Kodak Portra 400 for color. These films are forgiving of exposure errors and produce beautiful results in a variety of lighting conditions.
Carrying Your Gear
Vintage cameras deserve vintage-style accessories. A quality leather strap not only looks the part but provides the security you need when shooting on busy streets. Our Heritage Classic Neck Strap is designed with street shooters in mind – quick to adjust, comfortable for hours, and beautiful against a chrome camera body.
Embrace the Process
Shooting film forces you to slow down and think about every frame. With only 36 exposures per roll, each shot becomes deliberate and meaningful. This mindful approach often leads to stronger compositions and more emotionally resonant images.
